EASO to enhance its support to Cyprus
On 28 February 2017, EASO and Cyprus signed an amendment of the EASO Special Support Plan which provides for further tailor-made support to Cyprus until 31 January 2018. Besides continuing the implementation of the initial support measures, new activities on backlog management and contingency measures have been added.

On 8 February 2017, the Management Boards of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and the European Border and Coastguard Agency (Frontex) held their first joint meeting in Malta. The heads of border guard and asylum services of 28 Member States plus representatives from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland discussed cooperation between the agencies as a crucial element in implementing the European Union’s policies on migration management.

EASO’s support for Italy will continue and shall be enhanced in the course of 2017. EASO and Italy have today signed a single Operating Plan, encompassing all technical and operational assistance to Italy. Support activities foreseen include: support on relocation, supporting and enhancing identification and assistance to vulnerable applicants, especially with regards to unaccompanied minors and support with handling outgoing Dublin take charge requests.

Today, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) published a Country of Origin Information (COI) Report entitled ‘Eritrea – National service and illegal exit’. The report is an update of the 2015 EASO COI Report Eritrea Country Focus (1)It provides an overview on aspects related to national service and illegal exit in Eritrea relevant to international protection status determination of Eritrean applicants. In the first ten months of 2016, Eritrea ranked 7th in the top countries of origin in EU+ countries (2) with a total of 31 416 applicants.
